The Western Cape to Eastern Cape Golf Holiday Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Cape Town!
If you are lucky the plane will circle into Cape Town Airport with Table Mountain in full view; if not, within an hour you’ll be on your way into the City itself looking in amazement at this iconic Cape Town landmark. You can collect your hire car at the airport, or we can have you transferred to the Ocean View Guest House, with your hire car to be delivered later in the day. Your accommodation in Cape Town is the sumptuous Ocean View Guest House, which is a unique and luxurious retreat situated in the famous Camps Bay. Just meters from the glistening southern Atlantic Ocean and within a stroll of the ever so cosmopolitan restaurant and shopping area, the Ocean View Guest House is the perfect compliment for your stay in one of the great cities of the world.
Overnight: Ocean View Guest House, Camps Bay

Day 2: Settling into the Western Cape
For your first full day in Cape Town, our recommendation is to explore the Cape Town region and truly experience the wonder of the city and its surroundings. Our recommendation would be to firstly visit Table Mountain. Take the cable car to the top of the mountain and have a good look around. On a clear day the 360 panorama is simply breathtaking. With views towards Cape Point, the Cape of Good Hope, round to Robben Island, the City itself, the Winelands in the distance and round again towards False Bay, one’s jaw drops at the magnitude of the beauty of the setting. It really is awe inspiring. From Table Mountain head to Hout Bay and perhaps take a boat out to Seal Island to see seals in their natural habitat and perhaps some sharks too! From Hout Bay drive along Chapman’s Peak, which provides some of the most stunning coastal sightseeing in the Cape Town area. Our recommendation would then to head to Simonstown for lunch in the harbour area, before setting off to Boulders Beach to visit the penguins. The first of the beaches is a private beach only for the penguins, but if you walk around to the next beach you can share the beach with them. From Boulders Beach, travel to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. The T-shirts on sale will have you believe that this is where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, which is technically not true (Cape Agulhas to the east is the actual point) but the views are sensational and as you look out to sea there is no land until Antarctica. If time allows, a visit to Kirstenbosch Gardens in the late afternoon or early evening will certainly be time well spent. For dining out in the evening, you can’t go far wrong with Camps Bay itself, with its multitude of high class restaurants.
Overnight: Ocean View Guest House, Camps Bay

Day 3: Milnerton Golf Club
It seems fitting in a way that the first round of golf in Cape Town should be the one that encompasses the most iconic of Cape Town views, the piture postcard setting of Table Mountain with Table Bay in the foreground. Assuming that the setting does not prove too much of a distration, the Milnerton course is one of the few genuine links courses in the Western Cape. The course is a good challenge at the best of times, but especially when the prevailing South Easter, affectionately known as the ‘Cape Doctor’ makes her house calls in the summer months! Nestled between the Atlantic ocean and the RietVlei river, this lush links course is relatively flat with few trees. But with the sea and the lagoon bordering most holes, and the seven beautiful water holes waiting to claim the wayward shot, it offers a truly unique golfing experience. In the evening, we would recommend that you head to the V&A Waterfront for dinner, with its plethora of restaurants, shops and bars.

Day 4: Clovelly Golf Club
Your second round of golf is at Clovelly Golf Club, which has always been one of the most popular golf courses with clients over the years. Clovelly is one of southern Africa’s most picturesque and challenging courses and boasts undulating fairways, magnificent landscaping and features natural sand dunes that abound the course, as well as many natural water features. Clovelly really is one of the most enjoyable courses in the Cape and will sit long in the memory. After golf it is certainly worth exploring Fish Hoek and Noordhoek and perhaps having dinner in Hout Bay.
Overnight: Ocean View Guest House, Camps Bay

Day 5: Robben Island
Today you will head to Robben Island, the iconic island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for so many years. The day will involve a return ferry trip to the island and a guided tour around the island itself. Although much of the time on the island focuses on the apartheid years, the island has actually had a significant role to play in Cape Town’s history since before the 1650’s. The cost of the day is included within the holiday cost, and the experience really is a quite humbling one in the sense of showing the power of the human spirit and the victory of democracy over oppression. The ferry will depart and return to the V&A Waterfront which provides the opportunity to spend more time exploring the shops and enjoying the restaurants that are present on the Waterfront.
Overnight: Ocean View Guest House, Camps Bay

Day 6: Mowbray Golf Club
Back to the fairways today and a round at Mowbray Golf Club, which is recognised as being one of the best in the country with all major amateur championships having been played here. Mowbray Golf Club has hosted the South African Open seven times and the Bells Cup three times. Set at the foot of Table Mountain, Mowbray Golf Club is renowned for its breathtaking views, lush fairways and immaculate greens. There is a variety and abundance of birdlife clusters around the water features. You will experience the pleasure of teeing off down newly mown fairways, bordered by tall pines and indigenous trees. For your last evening in Cape Town, perhaps wander down to one of the Clifton Beaches, located next to Camps Bay, for dinner by the ocean and some of the most wonderful beach settings in Cape Town.

Day 7: Onto the Winelands
Following one final look at the awe inspiring Table Mountain, or one last shopping trip to the V&A Waterfront, it’s onto the Winelands for the coming few days. The Cape Winelands with its magnificent natural beauty, its rich cultural heritage and its world-renowned wines is a region synonymous with all the best that the Cape has to offer. Here the splendid mountains form a dramatic backdrop to the lush vineyards and the gabled Cape Dutch homesteads, which are steeped in history. Your accommodation in the Winelands is the quite enchanting Summerwood Guest House, which is situated in the beautiful university town of Stellenbosch. This unique Stellenbosch Winelands mansion, originally built in 1904, was designed by an Italian architect and has been lovingly restored to meet the demands of the modern traveller. With beautiful bedrooms, a wonderful breakfast area and lounge, along with a spectacular garden featuring a great variety of indigenous plants, the Summerwood Guest House really is the perfect location for your stay in the Winelands.

Day 8: Pearl Valley Golf Club
Your first round in the Winelands is at Jack Nicklaus’ Pearl Valley Golf Club, which quite simply needs to be seen to be believed. The course has one of the most astonishing settings and unsurprisingly is very high in quality. Every hole is played against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains surrounding the estate and all are challenging due to the bunkers and fast greens. The course has been designed with the area’s prevailing winds in mind; the winter northwesterly and the summer southeasterly. All par 3s and par 5s play in different directions, ensuring that the same conditions are not experienced too many times in one round. Today you will play one of the greatest of golf courses in Africa. After the round, we would suggest a detour to the nearby town of Franschhoek, one of the three main Winelands towns (Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl). Franschhoek is rightly regarded as the food and wine heartland of South Africa, where splendid wines are grown and top chefs create international cuisine. You will experience breath taking scenery, warm hospitality, world class cuisine and the finest wines in South Africa. All in all, not a bad day today!

Day 9: Exploring the Winelands
The Winelands is a wonderful region of South Africa. We recommend that you visit the Wine Estates and enjoy wine tasting and experience the amazing landscapes, towns and villages of the Winelands region.

Day 10: De Zalze Golf Club
The golf today is at the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate. The course was designed by Peter Matkovich, who also designed Leopard Rock, Arabella and Pinnacle Point amongst others, and who has made the most of the stunning setting and created a course that places a premium on accuracy. The course has an excellent mix of parkland holes, with its main challenges presented in the form of the water features on several holes, as well as the oak tree lined Blaauwklippen River, which winds its way through the Golf Estate and comes into play at various intervals. A super course and always a joy to play. After the round it would be worthwhile visiting either the Spier Wine Estate and / or the Vergelegen Wine Estate, both of which are excellent wine estates in their own right, but which also provide a wonderful insight into the history of the region.
Overnight: Summerwood Guest House, Stellenbosch

Day 11: Stellenbosch Golf Club
Your final round in the Winelands will be at Stellenbosch Golf Club. The Championship course has hosted many prestigious tournaments in the past, amongst them the South African Open and the South African Masters. Indeed the 1999 South African Open at Stellenbosch Golf Club proved to be one of the toughest Opens in the last decade or so. It is a super course and closely located to the Guest House. We will endeavour to book you morning tee-times in order to have the afternoon at leisure to explore the town and embrace its immense charm.

Day 12: Onwards to the Garden Route
After breakfast, it is time to move east to the Garden Route and Knysna, one of South Africa’s most beautiful towns. Our recommendation would be to make the journey a day long sightseeing expedition along the R62, which is the road located behind the mountain range that follow the coast to the Garden Route. You will drive through what is called the Klein Karoo (Little Desert in Afrikaans) and the scenery is spectacular. From the Klein Karoo you then drive through the Outeniqua Mountain range down into George, where you will reach the golden beaches of the Garden Route, before heading a little further east to the Lagoon town of Knysna. The drive is approximately 5 hours, but with stops for sightseeing and refreshments it becomes a sightseeing day in its own right. On arrival into Knysna you will check in to the Knysna Country House which offers stylish and comfortable accommodation in a peaceful and leafy Knysna suburb. The lush garden is home to a variety of birds, including the funky looking African Hoepoe, the colorful indigenous Knysna Loerie, the elegant Southern Double Collared Sunbird as well as the black and white spotted Helmeted Guinea Fowl. The Guest House has a large swimming pool, with the enticing image of the Knysna seahorse underneath the sparkling blue waters inviting you in at any time. Imagine coming home after your golf or sightseeing, and either taking a dip in the pool or enjoying a glass of wine on the balcony overlooking Knysna town and the Lagoon as the African sun sets behind the majestic Outeniqua Mountains. This is what awaits you!
Overnight: Knynsa Country House, Knysna

Day 13: Pezula Golf Club
Your round of golf today will be played at Pezula Golf Club, where you will tackle the breathtaking and award-winning Pezula course, which provides one of the ultimate challenges in the area. Perched above the Indian Ocean, you will experience some of the best scenery from a golf course in South Africa, not to forget the quite demanding challenge of the golf course. After the round it is certainly worth wandering down to Noetzie Beach, a wonderful beach in its own right (but dangerous to swim from because of the currents), but made all the more spectacular with the castles that are present just above the shore line. They have to be seen to be believed! Knysna also has a plethora of superb restaurants and the owners and staff at the Guest House will advise you which ones are best to visit.
Overnight: Knynsa Country House, Knysna

Day 14: Plettenberg Bay Golf Club
Your next round will be at the ever popular Plettenberg Bay Golf Club. The course is easy to walk, and the two main inclines can be observed from the veranda of the club house. Lush Kikuyu grass fairways and bayview greens recently over seeded to bent grass, provide players with an excellent playing surface. The course also has no intrusive houses or traffic noise and is populated only with indigenous flora and fauna. The natural beauty of the course has been carefully retained. Baboons, vervet monkeys, birdlife like the Knysna loerie and woodpeckers as well as the occasional bushbuck and deer, are the most likely distraction to your game. After the round please visit the Lookout Bar and Restaurant in Plettenberg Bay, which has one of the most dramatic views over the spectacular beaches that Plettenberg Bay is so famed for.

A day away from the fairways today and one to explore the wonders of the Garden Route. We suggest that you concentrate on the area from Knysna to Storms River Mouth. A further visit to Plettenburg Bay is certainly worthwhile and please also visit Natures Valley, Storms River Mouth and the Tsitsikkama National Forest, taking in the magnificent coastal and forestry settings. If you have any particular requirements in mind that need pre-booking or arranging, please let us know and we will assist accordingly.

Day 16: George Golf Club
George Golf Club, one of South Africa’s top ten courses, nestles against the Outeniqua Mountains and the famous Knysna Forest. Although the game has been played here since 1886 the club was only founded some 10 years ago. George is immaculately maintained, offers a truly traditional parkland challenge and is always an absolute delight to play. The course has a classically comfortable feel, and it is no surprise that it’s consistently rated as one of South Africa’s finest courses. On the way back to Knysna, it is certainly worth spending some time viewing the beaches of Wilderness and Sedgefield, which are some of the most dramatic along the Garden Route.

Day 17: Simola Golf Club
It’s a cliché, but the best golf course on the Garden Route is saved until last! The Simola course as a golf course challenge is magnificent, add in the setting, and the jaw drops at the splendour of the forest and the views over the valleys and the Indian Ocean in the distance. Simola has been our clients’ favourite course on the Garden Route since it opened a few years ago. Simola is the first Jack Nicklaus signature course on the Garden Route, reflecting the maestro’s philosophy of attuning the layout and design to the natural lie of the land. The course offers challenge and reward amidst the spectacular scenery. Set below the high ridges, the course is free from the wind that so often plagues coastal courses. The fairways flow with the natural undulating contours of the terrain and the unusual configuration of five par 5’s and five par 3’s adds a new dimension to the round. It’s par for the course that every hole boasts exceptional views; either out across the Knysna Lagoon all the way to the Heads or over the picturesque Knysna River as it twists and turns through the valley below. Spend the afternoon exploring Knysna further, or perhaps to take a boat trip around the lagoon which is always worthwhile.

Day 18: Onto the Eastern Cape and a day of game drives and leisure
It is time to bid farewell to the Garden Route and to push on to what feels like ‘real’ Africa, the Eastern Cape and home to South Africa’s ‘Big 5.’ You will drive east, beyond Port Elizabeth, to the Pumba Private Game Reserve, an exceptional Reserve and a fitting finale to your South African holiday. Having checked in, embark on an afternoon Game Drive. Accompanied by qualified rangers, you will experience true African big game from open landrovers. Sundowners at scenic spots will offer the opportunity to take in the tranquility of the surrounding bush. Having returned to the hotel, enjoy dinner in the hotel’s excellent restaurant.
