Itinerary 23: West Yorkshire

The area north of Leeds is an oasis of superb golf courses, and we are therefore presenting two itineraries for the region. The first includes Scarcroft, Moor Allerton and Leeds Golf Clubs. Scarcroft, designed by the leading golf architect, Major Charles Mackenzie, is a gloriously undulating course with a rich variety of mature trees and spacious fairways. Moor Allerton Golf Club is a 27-hole Robert Trent Jones Sr designed golf course. When the PGA European Tour came here, the course was played by Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman, Tom Weiskopf and Tony Jacklin to name but a few. Ryder Cup player Howard Clark was attached to Moor Allerton Golf Club as playing professional and Peter Alliss, who was also the Head Professional in the early 70’s, reckons that “Moor Allerton Golf Club is a golfing experience larger than life”. The famous golf architect Doctor Alastair MacKenzie was a member of Leeds Golf Club between 1900 and 1910. During that time, he gave advice on bunkers and the layout of the course. Doctor MacKenzie has influenced the design of many courses including St. Andrews, Prestwick, Troon, Alwoodley, Moortown, Royal Melbourne and, of course, Augusta National. Leeds Golf Club are active members of the Dr. Alastair MacKenzie Society. The hotel to compliment this unique itinerary is the superb Weetwood Hall Hotel, which is ideally located on the northern periphery of Leeds, close to the three Golf Clubs.
