Itinerary 21: Suffolk

Suffolk has always been a draw for clients and rightly so with the number of super courses located in the County. Our recommendation is to play Ipswich, Thorpeness and Felixstowe Ferry Golf Clubs. Ipswich, or Purdis Heath, as it is commonly known as, was designed by the legendary architect James Braid. It really is a classical design and an absolute delight to play. Thorpeness is another James Braid designed course and in 1922 Braid laid out the golf course on low lying heathland, just a stone’s throw from the Suffolk coast in an area of outstanding natural beauty. To this day, James Braid’s Thorpeness is regarded as one of the finest coastal heathland golf courses in Britain, and one of the best golf courses in Suffolk. Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club is the only links golf course in Suffolk and one of only 246 true links courses in the World. The Martello Course is also one of the oldest in England, having been established in 1880. Located right next to the sea with fabulous views over the Suffolk coast and Deben Estuary, it is a fitting course to conclude your tour of Suffolk. The hotel for the itinerary is the Pentahotel in centre of Ipswich, which we have been using for the last couple of years. Excellent quality, sensibly priced and within a stroll of the town centre and the nigh time buzz of the waterfront marina, it is the perfect complement to the location of the Golf Clubs.
